That is a possum . They’re nocturnal, normally don’t bother people or anything.  T hey can be unusually mean when they get backed into a corner. Their usual defense is playing dead, but if that doesn’t work they’ve got a mean set of teeth and are really tough.  They’re slightly bigger than a house cat, maybe up to the size of a small raccoon (which probably doesn’t help you much).

I made the mistake of thinking Dog B couldn’t get to one perched on the fence. I was mistaken . 2/10 would not recommend.

Nope. They’re found only in North and South America. There’s a different marsupial animal with the same name in Australia.

My dog had one pinned under our deck a while back. His chain wasn’t long enough to get to it, and he wouldn’t listen to anything i said. He really wanted to eat that possum. I finally dragged him in, and it escaped.

My parents’ dogs trapped one once. It had been out in the day, which probably wasn’t a good sign. The both developed lepto (which eventually killed one of them) shortly afterward, and you can’t help but wonder if the possum had been sick and passed it on.

Seeing this guy at light is less troubling.
